Driving time and rest periods
Great attention is paid to respecting the driving hours and rest periods of drivers. The hours of employment of the driver are regulated by law. The renter or passengers may not delay or interrupt the trip so that the driver violates the regulations. If this happens the renter is responsible for any additional costs necessary.
Regulation (EC) 561/2006 provides a set of Community rules for maximum daily driving times, as well as minimum daily and weekly rest periods for all drivers for the carriage of goods and passengers.
The purpose of this set of rules is to avoid distortions of competition, improve road safety and ensure good working conditions for drivers in the European Union.
These rules provide that:
- daily driving period must not exceed 9 hours, with an exemption twice a week when it can be extended to 10 hours.
- Total weekly driving time must not exceed 56 hours
- Daily rest must be at least 11 hours, with the exception of decreasing to 9 hours a maximum three times a week. Daily rest can be divided into 3 hours of rest followed by 9 hours of rest, for a total of 12 hours of rest per day.
- weekly rest is 45 continuous hours, which can be reduced every two weeks to 24 hours. Weekly rest must be taken after six days of work, except for bus drivers carrying out a single occasional international passenger transport service who may postpone the weekly rest period after 12 days in order to facilitate coach holidays.
- breaks of at least 45 minutes (separable into 15 minutes followed by 30 minutes) must be taken after 4 and a half hours of driving
Compliance with these provisions is subject to continuous monitoring and checks, which are carried out at national and international level, through the control of tachographs at the roadside and in company premises.
Drivers
Safety starts with our employees. Alterini Bus uses the Department of Transportation guidelines on medical certification to ensure that drivers meet industry requirements of government agencies. According to Legislative Decree no. 81/2008, they are subject to a preventive and periodic medical examination to ascertain the absence of drug addiction or the use of narcotic or psychotropic substances. The medical examination is preventive (as a condition of employment) and periodic (every year). The staff is exclusive and has a regular employee contract. New drivers take part in a training program led by older, more experienced drivers in order to become fully qualified, expert professionals.
Bus
To ensure high quality standards the company invests in the best coaches on the market, equipped with our specifications.
Our coaches go through frequent maintenance including braking systems, suspension and transmission, through the check of heating and air conditioning systems, inspection of all tyres and a review of oil and air levels. We replace critical parts well before they are needed.
Every coach is inspected regularly in authorised workshops and undergoes an annual inspection by the Ministry of Transport.
In addition, our drivers play an important role in the inspection process and are trained to examine key aspects of their vehicles before they leave our facilities.
This is a key aspect of our success, guarantee and reliability.
Seat Belts
We equipped our buses with seat belts for all passengers many years before the law required it. Today, all our buses have seat belts, and seventy percent of the fleet is equipped with three-point seat belts, similar to those in your cars.
Insurance policy
All our vehicles are insured by UNIPOL-SAI S.p.a. with the following coverage limits
- € 50,000,000.00 per accident
- € 40,000,000.00 for personal injury
- € 10,000,000.00 for damage to property
You are covered by this insurance when travelling on our vehicle for damage to persons or things that occur during transport. This is NOT travel insurance. It is not mandatory to take out other insurance but we recommend doing so especially if you are travelling outside of Italy.
